Wow, so much of what you wrote resonates with me. I also struggle to keep track of the things that fill my soul. It doesn't come naturally, I have to make the effort of thinking about it everyday, otherwise I loose myself. Why though? I can't understand. I'll read The artist's way and see if it helps me too.
Have you tried looking for a bookclub where you live so you could join? I've been doing it, and it helps to keep the habit, and its a great social event as well.
I have a book suggestion (from my bookclub) Isabel Allende's "Casa dos Espiritos" it's absolutely fabulous.
Ah Isa, it's a constant task and it's a difficult task, but... we continue on the journey. And yees, I loved this book, it helped me understand and think about a lot of things!
